As soldiers riot and elections are postponed, even the African Union tells Conté it is time to go
Gunfire in the night was only the start of it. After a relatively calm April, discontent has spread again. Soldiers have continued sporadic shooting to warn President Lansana Conté and his new Prime Minister, Lansana Kouyaté, that they are still unhappy. On 20 May, the Inter-Centrale Syndicale, the trades union federation, told Conté that he had violated their agreement with him by appointing his ally, Daouda Bangoura, as Central Bank Governor over Premier Kouyaté's head. Former Central Bank Governor Alkaly Mohamed Daffé was unable to continue in the job due to illness.
