Succession sagas

President Thabo Mbeki is trying to organise an orderly transfer of power unlike his counterparts in Angola and Zimbabwe

The ruling African National Congress’s choice of a successor to President Thabo Mbeki will dominate South African politics this year. In December 2007, the ANC holds its five-yearly national conference to elect a new president; that person is almost certain to be the country’s next national president. Extending the term of office of President Robert Mugabe until 2010 will not change Zimbabwe’s grim political or economic fundamentals. Deepening ructions will persist over the succession within the ruling party and the economic meltdown will continue after a heavy devaluation in the first quarter of 2007.
