Biya to defy critics and run again

As the 91-year-old president prepares to run for an eighth term in October, speculation is intensifying about how the regime ends

Despite mounting calls for Paul Biya to end his 42-year-long reign, the Cameroonian president intends to run again this year, hoping to lead the Central African nation for another seven years. ‘I can assure you that my determination to serve you remains intact and grows stronger every day, in the face of the magnitude of the challenges we face,’ the 91-year-old declared in his New Year’s Eve address to the nation. This follows his long absence for medical treatment in France in mid-2024 during which rival contenders were positioning for the succession in Yaoundé.
