Hostile homeland

The opposition's swift rejection of the 25 November agreement between the National Islamic Front and Umma Party has surprised both signatories. National Democratic Alliance leaders were 'unanimous' in deploring 'a flagrant violation' of NDA charters and they suspended NDA Secretary General Mubarek Abdullahi el Fadil el Mahdi, who had signed 'The Call of the Homeland' document on the Umma's behalf. Though the pact was made, in Djibouti, by President Omer el Beshir and El Sadig el Mahdi, neither signed it. Their acolytes did: Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismael ('Mr Smile'), who then rushed off to explain things to France and Germany, and Mubarek Abdullahi el Fadil, who omitted the Mahdi family name he always uses.
