Fighting fear with freedom

Abiy Ahmed calculates that a new era of democracy and respect for civil rights could counter any backlash to his reforms

It promises to be another tumultuous year for Ethiopia and its struggling ruling coalition, the Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front. After what amounted to an internal coup d'état in the first half of 2018, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has consolidated his dominance of the EPRDF and now has to work out what to do with his considerable power. The general direction of travel is clear. Repressive laws will be revised and the shackles removed from the media to encourage a more vibrant private press.
