Many Moroccans are proud to see their king bestriding the global stage but are less keen on the autocratic side of royalty

Moroccans are now used to King Mohammed VI (M6) leading the kingdom's drive to become a political and economic heavyweight in Africa. For decades North African leaders tended to look to Europe and other wealthier regions. The king's ostentatious display at the 29-30 November African Union-European Union summit in Abidjan, in his trademark djellaba, while his personal Boeing 747 flew the flag at Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, was widely welcomed back home. The Moroccan media trumpeted 'the incontestable demonstration' of his 'African leadership'.
