ANC dilemma deepens

The ruling party is under growing pressure to decide between its leader and its future

As South Africa's political crisis deepens ahead of the no-confidence motion vote aimed at ousting President Jacob Zuma on 8 August, a broad front of civil society organisations is poised to bring hundreds of thousands of people on to the streets to demand that Zuma step down. The coalition, known as Future South Africa, which encompasses organisations such as Save South Africa, Section 27, Freedom under Law and Corruption Watch, seeks to tackle what it calls the 'state capture' by the Gupta brothers and to 'rebuild state integrity'. The CSOs aim to demonstrate the kind of mass support which Zuma, a populist, understands and will have difficulty dodging.
