Getting ready for trouble

Politicians who benefited from land seizures are paying compensation and getting title deeds – in case the political tide turns

The government is making several payments to dispossessed farmers to regularise the legal status of land held by President Robert Mugabe's family and leading members of the ruling party, Africa Confidential has learned. This comes as opposition politicians, such as former Finance Minister Tendai Biti and sacked Vice-President Joice Mujuru, accuse top government officials of land grabbing. A directive has been sent, say financial sources in Harare, to the Minister of Lands, Douglas Mombeshora, and to the Treasury to ensure that all properties held by Mugabe's immediate family members would be 'clearly secured' through legal title by the end of the year. That means that payments are to be made to any claimant to ensure that the legality of the holdings cannot be challenged by an independent land audit.
