Push-ups and pushback

The President wants to root out corruption and regain control of the economy but bad habits prove hard to break

This time last year, John Magufuli was on stage in Karagwe in the north-west doing push-ups before a mass rally of supporters. The idea was to show he had what it takes to be President, although he did just four. In office, he has quickly gained a reputation for energetically cleaning up a corrupt state apparatus. The anti-corruption drive is real: over 120 senior officials have been suspended and a former Director of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) is in court on corruption charges. Over 17,000 'ghost workers' have been identified throughout the public service. On this firm basis, he hopes to drive the industrialisation of Tanzania and its graduation to middle-income status.
