Military mumbles

An economic boom has boosted President Bédié's fortunes but the army is not entirely happy 

Whatever else was discussed during President Henri Konan Bédié's hastily arranged meeting with French President Jacques Chirac in Paris on 16 May, it seems certain they talked about instability in the Ivorian army. Few other issues are so delicate that they could not have been handled by Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan, who had arrived in France almost a week before to attend an economic symposium. Bédié is a strong supporter of the French military presence in Africa.
