Bingu the favourite

Opposition splits, not political merit, will help the UDF win the presidency –again

By most measures, the governing United Democratic Front (UDF)have little hope of winning the national elections on 18 May. President Bakili Muluzi's UDF government has presided over worsening poverty and corruption since it took over from President Kamuzu Hastings Banda's brutal dictatorship in 1994. However, most of the political freedoms gained ten years ago have survived and the UDF's presidential candidate, Bingu wa Mutharika, has credibility as a technocrat ­ albeitof 72 and with little charisma.
