Jammeh cracks the whip

The consequences of the failed coup are proving dire for peaceful dissent as a wave of secret detentions takes place

The repercussions of December's failed coup against President Yahya Jammeh are still being felt in Gambia and in the United States. One of the most prominent democracy campaigners, Banka Manneh, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia, was charged on 18 March with violating the Neutrality Act. This outlaws plotting in the USA against governments with which America is not at war. Manneh is accused of buying two pistols and a rifle for the coup attempt and taking part in coup-planning conference calls.
