Published 2008 by Olympia Publishers ISBN 978-1-905513-32-1
Shirley Hunt portrays a former British colony as it was when the first settlers arrived.
Born in Southern Rhodesia, Hunt grew up hearing the older people talk about the 'early days'. This books gives insight into the history and the traditional African culture. It highlights the achievements of a young Zulu man, Khumalo, who led the ox wagons to the north, to the 'interior' as it was called then. It was a remarkable feat and the Parrington family who travelled with Khumalo and the other African bearers are to be admired.
In the generations to come, the Parrington and Khumalo sons were to fight side by side through five wars starting with the native Matabele and Shona uprisings, the Boer war, two World Wars and the last terrorist attack on Rhodesia.
