Polls fail to relieve tension

The country’s longest-serving Prime Minister returns to office with chronic political instability little changed by the elections

King Letsie III opened Lesotho's ninth Parliament on 11 March and the 120 MPs then elected Ntloi Motsamai as Speaker. The ceremonies were the only uncontentious aspect of the change in government as Thomas Thabane's coalition gave way to a new governing alliance under Pakalitha Mosisili, who was Prime Minister for 15 years until Thabane beat him at the polls in 2012. So uncertain is the atmosphere that South African police are still protecting the Parliament building and Thabane's person.
