Ouattara looks at second term

The President faces greater danger from his allies than from a demoralised opposition that is stubbornly loyal to his predecessor

The main opposition Front populaire ivoirien appears unable to accept that it must replace its leader, ex-President Laurent Gbagbo, to contest the elections in October. The International Criminal Court is not about to release Gbagbo, who awaits trial for crimes against humanity. Yet his former Prime Minister and party leader, Pascal Affi N'Guessan, cannot unite the FPI. As a result it is veering, amidst intrigue and acrimony, towards a split between the two men's followers.
