Spiking Syria

Some compromise on South Africa's mooted arms sales to Syria may emerge from United States' Vice-President Al Gore's meeting with Deputy President Thabo Mbeki next month in Pretoria. Gore, who is set to reiterate Washington's strong line against the sales, can't afford to associate himself with any equivocal South African statement on Syria. Gore is all but anointed as Democratic Party presidential candidate for 2000 and any weakness on sanctions against Syria means danger from Jesse Helms, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and from Washington's powerful Israeli lobby.
