The PF picks two candidates

The bitter split in the governing party is now before the courts. Yet the official candidate, whoever it is, may still have the best chance of winning

A national conference so turbulent that the police fired shots over the heads of the crowd has ended with both factions of the Patriotic Front putting forward their own candidates for next month's presidential election. On 1 December, some 8,000 'delegates', many of them unemployed youths paid to stir up trouble for the opposing faction, met at the Mulungushi Rock of Authority at Kabwe for the governing PF's conference to select its candidate for the presidential by-election on 20 January. This has been triggered by the death of President Michael Sata on 28 October.
