Macky Sall is holding a referendum on returning the presidential term to five years. That will mean an election in 2017
President Macky Sall's re-election campaign is already commanding his agenda. He has confirmed that a referendum on reducing the presidential mandate from seven to five years will take place in 2016. In one of the measures designed to lengthen his stay in power, his predecessor, ex-President Abdoulaye Wade, had extended the presidential term by two years. At the same time, Sall is concentrating on the two coalitions he put together to win the last poll: Macky 2012, with which he won the first round, and Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY), which saw him through the second. If, as expected, the referendum approves the reduction of the term, the next presidential election will take place in 2017.
