Africa will be a low priority for the new team at the Elysée and Quai d'Orsay

Africa will lose even more of its special status under France's new conservative government, appointed by President Jacques Chirac after his 82 per cent re-election victory over Jean-Marie le Pen on 5 May. The defeat of the leader of the extreme right-wing Front National has done little to still worries among African migrants about the spectre of fascism in Europe. Chirac and new Premier Jean-Pierre Raffarin want to crush both the Socialist opposition and its racist foes led by Le Pen in the parliamentary elections on 9 and 16 June.
