Political parties and the government

Sudan's history of multiparty democracy has been interrupted by three periods of dictatorship but that of the National Islamic Front-National Congress Party is by far the longest. The two historic 'sectarian' parties (National Umma Party and Democratic Unionist Party, DUP) lack dynamism, policies and the will to challenge the ruling NIF-NCP. The third main old party, the Sudan Communist Party (SCP), has ebbed since the Berlin Wall fell, the year the NIF seized power. The Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), launched in 2011, is successful militarily but struggles to make its political mark locally or with foreign governments worried about growing regional instability.
