Poison politics

Alongside its terrible human cost in north-eastern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, there are signs that the Boko Haram insurgency is seriously damaging the government's political standing. A stilted discussion between President Goodluck Jonathan's emissaries and the #bringbackourgirls campaign seemed only to prompt louder protests about the government's inaction. Then Obi Ezekwesili, a leader of the campaign and former Africa Vice-President of the World Bank, condemned an attack on a #bringbackourgirls vigil at Unity Fountain, Abuja, on 28 May by what she described as government-supporting thugs.
