Family business under pressure

The persistence of charges of nepotism and revelations about public sector corruption are threatening the President’s image and legacy

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has never shied away from appointing her children and relatives to public office when she thought it right. Opposition objections were often muted by the fact that the appointees were usually well-qualified. However, when her 17-year-old great nephew, Estrada Bernard III, rose in March to make a presentation to Liberia's lawmakers and the President's cabinet on the draft Petroleum Act, the ensuing public outcry nearly derailed the bill.
