Mrema on Marando

The country had only one credible party of opposition. Now it has none. The National Convention for Constitution and Reform (NCCR)-Maguezi fell apart in confusion last week. Its intellectual wing, led by Secretary General Mabere Marando and Dr. Masumbuko Lamwai, a leading lawyer, had decided to get rid of their erratic, populist Chairman, Augustine Mrema, before he could dig himself in as the party's presidential candidate for the poll due in the year 2000.
