Taylor's stitches

Under President Charles Taylor, Liberia has quickly showed symptoms of instability. On 19 July, the day after voting, 'armed robbers' killed Christine Davis, a leading election worker for presidential runner-up Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Allegations of election-rigging became harder to investigate after the death, from a heart attack, of the respected Electoral Commissioner, Henry Andrews on his return from the late-August Economic Community of West African States' summit (AC Vol 38 No 18). When workers on the Firestone rubber estates protested about the company's terms for restarting operations, the authorities sent an armed security team which shot into the crowd; seven people were wounded (unconfirmed reports raised that to nine killed).
