Trades unionists and communists challenge the power and policies of their ANC allies

The political structures of post-Independence South Africa are shaking, as the African National Congress adapts itself to the uncomfortable realities of power. Formally, the ANC works in 'Tripartite Alliance' with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu: 17 affiliated unions claiming 1.7 million members), and the smaller South African Communist Party (SACP). In fact the ANC is in control. Its allies deplore most of its economic policies but are inhibited by the knowledge that a split would damage them far more than the ANC.
