Talk of improved relations between the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front and the main Oromo opposition party, the Oromo Liberation Front, looks overblown. On 8 October, the government reported a shootout between OLF 'remnants' and security forces, claiming three OLF killed, two captured. Two days later, Solomon Nemera, Editor of the Oromo weekly Urji was arrested, together with his assistant editor; the paper had queried the EPRDF version of events and thrown doubt on the affiliation of those killed. Urji has reported widespread abuses against suspected OLF members and Oromo civilians in southern and eastern areas of Oromiya State; it also reports on OLF activity, which is rather more extensive than officially admitted.
