Biya's bad joke

The opposition’s boycott handed the ruling party a landslide

It took the government three days to produce partial preliminary results for the presidential election of 12 October. The only surprise was the scale of the victory claimed for President Paul Biya. The Minister of Territorial Administration, Gilbert Andzé Tsoungui, announced in Yaoundé that the turnout had been 80.58 percent, giving Biya a landslide triumph against the opposition boycott. This was regarded as a joke, but a bad one.
