Tarnished

Mali's democratic credentials are being questioned by Amnesty International in its report Mali: basic liberties at risk. It lists allegations of police torture of arrested opposition activists, after the bungled elections in April-July. The report includes photos of people with severe bruises. Amnesty urges President Alpha Oumar Konaré to 'control the use of force by members of the security forces', especially the shock police known as 'ninjas'.
