Carpet crossing

Talk of ouverture or power-sharing in Abidjan has been scuppered by the defection of leading oppositionist Adama Coulibally to the ruling Parti Démocratique de la Côte d’Ivoire . The appointment as Transport Minister of Coulibally, who was number two in the Rassemblement des Républicains (RDR) and Mayor of the opposition stronghold of Korhogo, incensed his opposition colleagues. President Henri Konan Bédié portrays Coulibally’s appointment as political ouverture (AC Vol 38 No 25). The idea was to heal wounds left by the 1995 elections, which were marred by bloodshed, boycotts and vote-rigging. But the opposition RDR and Front Populaire Ivoirien (FPI) saw it as an attempt to co-opt them, Senegal-style, and rejected it.
