The land conference on 24-25 June could turn into a fiasco, some insiders predict. White commercial farmers, the biggest losers if the government confiscates their land without compensation, see the meeting as a chance to produce a national land programme and win donors’ hearts. Indigenous commercial farmers, who’ d do best out of land designation, see the conference as a waste of time, aimed at appeasing donors and white farmers. Britain, expected by President Robert Mugabe’s government to help pay for the scheme, may wash its hands of the whole thing due to ‘lack of transparency’ .
