Succession rumble

General Gnassingbé Eyadéma has not appeared in public since the Liberation Day celebrations on 13 January, date of President Sylvanus Olympio's murder and Eyadéma's seizure of power in 1967. The Great Helmsman visited Pope John Paul II in December and had medical attention in Italy, we hear. In Accra for the Economic Community of West African States summit, eye-witnesses described him as 'frail', 'walking slowly' and closely shepherded by bodyguards.
