Full steam ahead

President Ian Khama Seretse Khama and the governing Botswana Democratic Party will romp home in October’s general elections. Disquiet over Lieutenant General Khama’s autocratic leadership style, secretive business dealings and determination to confront the unions are unlikely to derail the BDP electoral steamroller. He has deflected accusations of dictatorial behaviour by appointing the Vice-President, Ponatshego Kedikilwe, as the new BDP Chairman. Khama’s choice of Kedikilwe’s successor will be closely watched because he or she will have an advantage in the race to succeed the President, who must step down by 2019. A clear favourite for the vice-presidency has yet to emerge but likely contenders include Finance and Development Planning Minister Kenneth Matambo and Phandu Skelemani at Foreign Affairs (AC Vol 49 No 8, New man, new discipline).
