Rising up against Compaoré

Mass demonstrations and party defections signal that 26 years of Compaoré are enough for many people in Burkina but will it be enough to unseat him?

Tens – the opposition says hundreds – of thousands of people took to the streets of the capital and other towns over the weekend in the biggest protests for years against President Blaise Compaoré. His December proposal in to change Article 37 of the constitution so as to remove term-limits and keep him in power proved the last straw. Perhaps even more worrying for the President and his friends and relations, who have dominated the political and business scene throughout his rule, was the defection of three ruling party stalwarts who had been with him since the mid-1980s.
