Saving Field Marshal Omer

President Omer el Beshir promised to step down in 2015 and now he has a new deputy whom he trusts not to turn him over to the ICC

Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir ‘decided to meet his fate with those he trusts most’, said a senior opposition source of the 8 December reshuffle. Some key leaders were removed from the Palace. Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, 69, lead negotiator of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and for years deputy to Islamist guru Hassan Abdullah el Turabi, resigned as First Vice-President to ‘make way for younger people’. The far-from-young Lieutenant General Bakri Hassan Salih, 64, replaces him: his reputation as a bon viveur belied the Islamist nature of the 1989 coup. Also out is Presidential Advisor Nafi’e Ali Nafi’e, former hands-on, Iran-trained, security chief. He leads the rival faction to Ali Osman’s and Omer, also 69, could not move only one.
