Frelimo unnerved

The governing party won the polls but the MDM shows signs of growing into a serious political challenge

The governing Frente de Libertação de Moçambique and President Armando Guebuza emerged from the local elections on 20 November still in power nationwide. Yet cracks have appeared. Some key town councils remain in the hands of the opposition Movimento Democrático de Moçambique. Led by Daviz Simango, the MDM held on to key positions, such as the mayorships of Beira and Quelimane, although Frelimo activists had targeted them aggressively (AC Vol 54 No 13, A bumpy ride to the polls). Simango was himself Mayor of Beira for the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana until Renamo's leader, Afonso Dhlakama, sacked him in 2008 and he went on to found the MDM (AC Vol 52 No 17, Renamo threatens a return to violence).
