The Atlantic ports puzzle

Kinshasa cannot decide whether to develop its own outlet to the Atlantic or depend on Brazzaville. It’s all about geopolitics and special interests

Congo-Kinshasa has a small port, Matadi, while Congo-Brazzaville has a much larger one, at Pointe-Noire. The Kinshasa government needs to decide between them. There are rival views on what’s best for Congo-Kinshasa and just to complicate the picture, Angola has declared an interest in building a deep-water port north of the city of Cabinda, to free it from depending on Pointe-Noire. The century-old argument about access to the Atlantic Ocean from the Congo Basin, past the great unnavigable falls of the lower Congo River, has come to life again.
