Gaffes on the Nile

Such is the level of distrust around President Mohamed Mursi’s beleaguered government that some insiders are convinced his officials deliberately misled opposition politicians about the ‘secrecy’ of a meeting at which they suggested attacking Ethiopia. In what initially appeared to be a crass diplomatic gaffe, Egyptian politicians were heard on live television on 4 June proposing military strikes to stop Ethiopia building its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile. Last week, Ethiopia began diverting the river in preparation. The dam is to generate some 6,000 megawatts and cost US$4.2 billion. The Technical Committee’s recent report is confidential, but we hear that the dam is to go ahead.
