Peace deals and petro-wealth

Regional giant Nigeria will reflect West Africa's ambiguities in 2004: peace deals and petro-wealth but growing communal violence and hobbled economies (AC Vol 44 No 25). These stretch from established multi-party systems such as Ghana and Senegal to civil war and mayhem in Liberia and former regional pillar Côte d'Ivoire. Succession battles will dominate Nigerian politics and distract government from its promised reforms though President Olusegun Obasanjo's second term is barely nine months old. Frontrunners vying to take over the governing People's Democratic Party after Obasanjo are Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former military leader Ibrahim Babangida. Entering from the wings is former military Governor of Lagos State Mohammed Marwa. Obasanjo and his old adversary Babangida still circle each other cautiously. Relations between Obasanjo and Atiku will sink lower.
