One year under the Rainbow

The ruling coalition looks untidy but President Kibaki is moving ahead

On the night of 11 December, while President Mwai Kibaki was preparing to celebrate 40 years of Kenya's Independence, his Minister for Public Works, Raila Amolo Odinga, was holding a star-studded party at the United Kenya Club in central Nairobi. The two men lead parties that are uneasily linked within the governing National Alliance Rainbow Coalition (NARC) ­ Kibaki's National Alliance for Kenya (NAK) and Odinga's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Odinga's Independence Eve party cheered on the LDP's achievements and launched its new emblem, emphasising that he has a power-base independent of Kibaki, and won't let it go.
