Mastering the militias

Under pressure from Chad, the President is neutralising the militias in the north, amid questions about whether the peace can last

Chad’s President Idriss Déby Itno has had a crucial influence on the regime of President François Bozizé Yangouvonda and he has let him know that the armed Chadian exiles in CAR must be brought to heel. General Déby had expected that Gen. Bozizé would curb the various movements which, although currently in disarray, could regroup at any moment and pose serious risks in Chad (AC Vol 52 No 18). Bozizé seemed to understand that action was needed when the governments of Chad, Sudan and CAR met in Khartoum on 25 May. The urgency grew when attacks on Chadians in Bangui took place in early June (AC Vol 52 No 12).
