Presidential guard fall out

The two armed attacks on President Alpha Condé that claimed three lives on the night of 19 July are part of the struggle between old and new members of the Presidential Guard for control of this key military unit, we hear. General Nouhou Thiam, who was Chief of Staff to the previous President, Gen. Sékouba Konaté, was one of several men rounded up. Condé sacked him recently for refusing to hand back some government four-wheel-drive vehicles and openly insulting him.
