A Mills bomb for Rawlings

Having secured the presidential nomination for the incumbent, the top NDC officials cannot afford to ignore his challenger

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, wife of ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, the National Democratic Congress founder, timed her bid badly. A special congress of Ghana’s governing NDC on 8-9 July rejected her attempt to take the party leadership from Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who has been national President since January 2009 and has 18 months to serve of his four-year mandate. She got just 90 votes, against 2,271 for Mills. Many people assume that the NDC cannot win the 2012 election without active support from the Rawlings family (AC Vol 52 Nos 13 & 14). Some say now they may campaign against him or form a rival party but that looks unlikely as the Mills camp commands the NDC machine.
