Generating power and cash

The Richmond-Dowans scandal shows no sign of fading away but a US company is starting to provide electricity

Much of Tanzania struggles with power cuts lasting 16 hours a day while the government tries to deal with the mess created by the scandal over the overpriced Richmond generators (AC Vol 52 No 9). The United States’ energy company Symbion Power has now bought the generators which have been idle since August 2008. Their combined potential output is 120 megawatts and Tanzania is short of an estimated 350MW.
