Obasanjo encore

Former military leader General Olusegun Obasanjo’s bid for the Presidency in February’s elections has attracted a strange coalition of supporters: genuine patriots fearful of the breakup of the country, rank opportunists who want to buy into the new order and protect their illgotten gains, his many Western admirers, and the merely nostalgic, who remember that Nigeria under Obasanjo’s first term (1976-79) was richer, more united and taken more seriously in the world.
