The candidates line up

An official probe into a corrupt oil deal with Nigerian companies is worrying the political class and could upset calculations in the coming elections

São Tomé e Príncipe holds its much delayed presidential election in July. Meanwhile, a parliamentary inquiry into claimed corruption over an oil project with Nigeria is upsetting the political elite, as the second bidding round for offshore oil leases is due later this year. President Fradique Bandeira Melo de Menezes is nearing the end of his second and final term (AC Vol 47 No 7). His old ally, the current Prime Minister, Patrice Trovoada, will be standing for president but his prospects suffer from the poor reputation of the government he now heads.
