Congo contradictions

Security issues and Central Africa dominated a crowded Francophone summit

Congo confusion reigned as the 20th Franco-African Summit drew to a close in Paris on 28 November. United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan spoke confidently of an immediate cessation of hostilities; Rwanda’s President Pasteur Bizimungu and South Africa’s head of state-apparent Thabo Mbeki were pessimistic. In one closed session, Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak broke up a slanging match between various protagonists in the Congo-Kinshasa war.
