The death of perhaps 200 people this month, mainly civilian returnees, in attacks in Jonglei State, Southern Sudan, show the havoc that one militia can wreak. This militia is led by Lieutenant General George Athor Deng who commands, according to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), 2,000 fighters (AC Vol 51 No 20). The Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) last August paraded a Russian MI-60 helicopter captured, along with Athor’s intelligence chief, Major Gen. James Yor Chol, seven soldiers, two Russians and a Kazakh. It sported the Sudan Airways flag labelled ‘Special Flights Services’ and is still parked in Juba, unclaimed by Khartoum’s National Congress Party regime.
