The accidental President Goodluck Jonathan takes on the northern establishment, with unpredictable results

All the ingredients in the presidential and parliamentary elections due in April make for a fierce political battle. The dominant national party for over a decade is losing its grip and its internal divisions are deepening; a stridently independent head of the electoral commission says he will refuse to endorse false poll results; powerful economic interests are fighting reforms in the financial and oil sectors; and there is a rising tide of militia violence stretching from the oil rich Niger Delta through the Middle Belt to the far north.
