At stake: oil, migrants and gemstones

Behind the obligatory shows of unity between the governments of Angola and Congo-Kinshasa lurk serious disagreements over the frontiers dividing the oil fields straddling the two countries, diamond concessions and treatment of cross-border migrants. However, the formal communiqué at the end of President Joseph Kabila’s visit to his Angolan opposite number, José Eduardo dos Santos, on 20 September made the routine declarations of friendship and solidarity.
