Realpolitik and resignations

The resignation of Alain Joyandet, secretary of state for cooperation, will reinforce the grip of the Elysée Palace on France’s Africa policy. Joyandet, who was forced out after it was revealed he spent 116,500 euros (US$147,475) in state funds on a private jet for a working trip to Martinique, was one of President Nicolas Sarkozy‘s more loyal lieutenants. He benefited from Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner’s antipathy to Sarkozy’s diplomatic tactics and carved his own Africa policy niche.
